Her father was a truck driver , and the family had to move often. They were in various countries, including Germany, Japan, Greece and many other places around the world. Harden settled in Maryland and was a student at Surrattsville High school in Clinton. After having graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1980 with the degree of theater She continued her education at the University of Texas at Austin. Harden was later admitted to NYU's Tisch School of the Arts in 1988, where she received her MFA in 1988.
